West Nile Virus is a part of the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex of viruses, it is found in both tropical and temperate regions. It mainly infects birds, but is known to infect humans, horses, dogs, cats, bats, chipmunks, skunks, squirrels, and domestic rabbits. The main route of human infection is through the bite of an infected mosquito.”
Symptoms include; fever, headache, chills, excessive sweating, weakness, swollen lymph nodes, drowsiness, pain in the joints and symptoms like those of influenza or the flu. Other patients have experienced nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Approximately 90% of West Nile Virus infections in humans are without any symptoms. Untreated, humans that contract West Nile Virus can die.
Not only do diseases from mosquitoes affect humans, but they also affect other mammals, including dogs and cats.
Heartworm
According to this Wikipedia article on Heartworm, “Heartworm is a parasitic roundworm that is spread from host to host through the bites of mosquitoes. The definitive host is the dog but it can also infect cats, wolves, coyotes, foxes and other animals, such as ferrets, sea lions and even, under very rare circumstances, humans. Heartworm infection may result in serious disease for the host.”
Symptoms include; dry cough, shortness of breath, a loss of stamina and abnormal heart and lung sounds. In later stages the dog will experience weight loss, congestive heart failure, swelling of the legs and abdomen due to fluid accumulation and eventually death.
